[DCRM-L] a question came up during the close reading of Examples

Thanks everyone. For those of you who wish to know, look at p. xxv in Standard Citations (print version). As Jain and Richard point out, it’s noted in the third paragraph.

I’m glad someone found it, because I sure couldn’t!

Guidelines are given in Standard Citations, pp. xxv-xxvi: "Working Principles, V. Numeration".

I'm not sure we're permitted to go outside Standard Citations here, but rule 7B14.2 in DCRM(B) doesn't mention the use of any commas. The examples, however -- which admittedly are not prescriptive -- use a comma after the title portion unless the title portion ends with a parenthesis. The examples maintain this trend for title portions that end with letters and numbers alike.

Hi everyone

I know there are a lot of opinions, but is there a rule that states whether to use a comma after the title portion of the citation. I can’t find a specific rule except a mention of a “final comma” relating to the addition of page numbers in the printed version of Standard Citations (p. xxiii). So, based on what I can surmise from examples in Standard Citations, it occurs to me that the only time a cataloger would include a comma between the title portion and the location portion of the reference would be when the title portion ends in a number.

So, this:

510 4_ Hoover, A.B. Old order Mennonite bib. (In his Jonas Martin era, p. 981-1105), ‡c 132
510 4_ ESTC ‡cT345

But, I also see (on p. xxvii of S.C.), this:

510 4_ Drake, M. Almanacs, ‡c 143

And, in MARC Bibliographic (on LC’s website), there’s this:

‡aGoff,‡cA-970

Anyone?

Thanks!

Nina
