[DCRM-L] a question came up during the close reading of Examples

Hi, Nina,
There actually is a rule in Std. Cit’ns, but it’s a little difficult to recognize as such. It’s on p. xxv, under “Numeration”, 2nd paragraph. But first you need to remind yourself that it is not showing the MARC coding, then it will make more sense. All it says is, “For short standard citations (i.e., single last name or acronym citation forms), separate the citation form from the number by one space”. So, Goff $c D-143, really turns out to look as the example shows: Goff D-143 (and so on).

Pedantry and mastery are opposite attitudes toward rules.
To apply a rule to the letter, rigidly, unquestioningly, in cases where it fits and in cases where it does not fit, is pedantry...
To apply a rule with natural ease, with judgment, noticing the cases where it fits, and without ever letting the words of the rule obscure the purpose of the action or the opportunities of the situation, is mastery.

Hi everyone

I know there are a lot of opinions, but is there a rule that states whether to use a comma after the title portion of the citation. I can’t find a specific rule except a mention of a “final comma” relating to the addition of page numbers in the printed version of Standard Citations (p. xxiii). So, based on what I can surmise from examples in Standard Citations, it occurs to me that the only time a cataloger would include a comma between the title portion and the location portion of the reference would be when the title portion ends in a number.

So, this:

510 4_ Hoover, A.B. Old order Mennonite bib. (In his Jonas Martin era, p. 981-1105), ‡c 132
510 4_ ESTC ‡cT345

But, I also see (on p. xxvii of S.C.), this:

510 4_ Drake, M. Almanacs, ‡c 143

And, in MARC Bibliographic (on LC’s website), there’s this:

‡aGoff,‡cA-970

Anyone?

Thanks!

Nina
