[DCRM-L] a question came up during the close reading of Examples

My understanding is that if the citation form is a single surname, there is no comma. E.g., Goff ‡c C-143 Adams ‡c C-143
But with longer forms, use a comma: e.g., Church, E.D. Engl. Lit., ‡c 319
See p. xxv of SCF for Rare Book Cataloging, section V. Numeration.

Hi everyone

I know there are a lot of opinions, but is there a rule that states whether to use a comma after the title portion of the citation. I can’t find a specific rule except a mention of a “final comma” relating to the addition of page numbers in the printed version of Standard Citations (p. xxiii). So, based on what I can surmise from examples in Standard Citations, it occurs to me that the only time a cataloger would include a comma between the title portion and the location portion of the reference would be when the title portion ends in a number.

So, this:

510 4_ Hoover, A.B. Old order Mennonite bib. (In his Jonas Martin era, p. 981-1105), ‡c 132
510 4_ ESTC ‡cT345

But, I also see (on p. xxvii of S.C.), this:

510 4_ Drake, M. Almanacs, ‡c 143

And, in MARC Bibliographic (on LC’s website), there’s this:

‡aGoff,‡cA-970

Anyone?

Thanks!

Nina
