Announcing: California Rare Book School comes to the San Francisco Bay Area
For the first time, you are invited to come to San Francisco & Berkeley to attend California Rare Book School (CalRBS). Two courses will be offered in these special Northern California locations during the week of October 17-21, 2011.

"Donors and Libraries" will be co-taught by William P. Barlow, Jr., collector and Partner, Barlow & Hughan; and Susan M. Allen, Director of CalRBS. It is co-sponsored by The Book Club of California. The class will meet at The Book Club in San Francisco from Monday, October 17, through Friday, October 21. Tuesday, October 18, will be spent at the Bancroft Library, UC, Berkeley.

This course is particularly aimed at rare book and special collections librarians who interact with donors, donors who wish to learn more about institutional policies and practices, and booksellers who would like to know more about how libraries deal with gifts. Tax and legal matters are covered extensively.

"Rare Book Cataloging" will be taught by Randal S. Brandt, Head of Rare Book Cataloging at the Bancroft Library. This class will meet in the Bancroft Library at UC, Berkeley from Monday, October 17, through Friday, October 21.

This course is aimed at catalog librarians who find that their present (or future) duties include the cataloging of rare books or special collections materials. Attention will be given primarily to cataloging books from the hand-press period, with some discussion given to 19th and 20th century books in a special collections context.

Founded in 2005, CalRBS is a continuing education program dedicated to providing the knowledge and skills required by those involved in all aspects of the rare book community. Each course amounts to forty hours of instruction over five days, equivalent to an entire academic quarter in just one week. CalRBS is a project of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA.
Tuition is $995 per course.

Applications are available on the CalRBS Web site: www.calrbs.org.
