[DCRM-L] FW: OCLC revision proposal on recording edition statements

If the idea is to discuss amending DCRM(B) to allow for a supplied edition
statement (under conditions that are pretty well expressed in the LCRI* but
left unfortunately vague in the LCPS) I'm all for it.

In FRBR terms, the edition statement is sometimes the only means by which
to differentiate manifestations that are not distinguishable in simplified
transcription or even DCRM-level structural data for "extent" or whatever
the heck it's going to be called henceforth.

This, it should be noted, is in the absence of the one nonexistent field
actually needed to classify FRBR entities: some equivalent of the heading
that precedes the description of each entity in a properly constructed
bibliography--a sort of genetic uniform title. It don't get more FRBR than
that!

*"Apply the option for *manifest differences where the catalog records
would otherwise show exactly the same information in the areas beginning
with the title and statement of responsibility area and ending with the
series area*." LCRI 1.2B4 (emphasis mine; with the understanding that
"manifest differences" may include evidence developed from comparison of
copies by the cataloger, a process now greatly enabled *via* digital
resources)
