Larry,

I was not sure from the wording of your email if you are aware that $v Sermons can be used under the name of an individual person, so I have provided an explanation below for you if you are not, and for anyone else interested in $v Sermons.

The free floating subdivision $v Sermons may be applied to the name of a person if that person is the subject of the sermon. The instruction sheet H 2032 explains the proper use of the heading Sermons and the subdivision. Section 2.d. of this instruction sheet says this, "By topic. To individual sermons or collections of sermons about a topic, individual person, or sacred work, assign a heading for the topic, uniform title for the sacred work, or the name of the person subdivided by the free-floating form subdivision -Sermons. It includes an example using $v Sermons under Saint Francis of Assisi. The instruction sheet on free-floating subdivisions, H 1100, says this under $v Sermons: "Use as a form subdivision, particularly under divine persons or saints, for single sermons or collections of sermons about the person."

I agree the distinction between Funeral sermons and Eulogies is not always clear when cataloging pre-1801 materials because the world was far less secular than it is today.

Looking at the LC online catalog, the SH Funeral Sermons seems to be applied to sermons or eulogies given on occasions other than the actual

funeral. One should also be able to use the subdivision Sermons under

the name of a person. Of course, Eulogies is also a valid SH, and the dividing line is not always all that clear since some religious groups permit eulogies during funeral services.
