About 30 proposals, discussion papers, etc. have been posted to the JSC website for community review, in advance of the November JSC meeting. A complete list of proposals is available here: http://www.rda-jsc.org/working1.html#constituency

Below I highlight the proposals that may be of most interest to the DCRM community. In the weeks to come, I will post to this list to seek your input on some of these topics. Please don't be shy about offering your thoughts. As RBMS Liaison to CC:DA, I will be happy to forward your comments to CC:DA by way of the CC:DA wiki, which you are also welcome to follow (http://wikis.ala.org/ccda/index.php/Main_Page), though only members and liaisons can post comments.

Thanks,
Francis

ALA/26: Colour Content (RDA 7.17)
http://www.rda-jsc.org/docs/6JSC-ALA-26.pdf

The above item may be of most interest to graphics catalogers. It deals with a number of issues pertaining to color, including (but not limited to):

*         Tinting and toning

* Hand-coloring: "ALA notes that an entire manifestation may be issued with hand colouring. Therefore, we propose to limit the reference to RDA 3.21 in the fourth paragraph of 7.17.1.1 (both options) to item-specific hand colouring."

ALA/Discussion 1: Machine-Actionable Data Elements in RDA: Discussion Paper
http://www.rda-jsc.org/docs/6JSC-ALA-Discussion-1.pdf

This discussion paper builds on the work of an earlier TF. It recommends:

* Adding Extent of Expression and Extent of Item to the RDA element set.

* Extending the RDA/ONIX Framework for Resource Categorization, in order to flesh out fuller sets of types for content and carrier.

* A modification of the Aspect-Unit-Quantity model (proposed by the earlier TF) to accommodate complex extent data.

ALA/Rep 6: Note on Manifestation and Item
http://www.rda-jsc.org/docs/6JSC-ALA-rep-6.pdf

A proposal to make changes to the Registry, the Element Analysis tables, and the text of RDA, to reflect the 2012 RDA revision of the element Note (in Chapters 2 and 3) to Note on Manifestation or Item.

CCC/12: Revision of Appendix D regarding capitalization practice
http://www.rda-jsc.org/docs/6JSC-CCC-12.pdf

" ... One ISBD capitalization practice formerly found in AACR2 Appendix A.7B1 was not included in the text of RDA or in the appendices. That AACR2 rule resulted in the capitalization of the first word in an ISBD area. CCC is proposing these changes:

1. CCC is recommending the addition of text to the beginning of Appendix D.1.2 ISBD Punctuation to cover capitalization of the first element in an area ...

2. CCC is also recommending the renaming of D.1.2 to Capitalization and Punctuation ..."

CCC/14: Revision of RDA 3.5.3 (Dimensions of still images)
http://www.rda-jsc.org/docs/6JSC-CCC-14.pdf

"CCC proposes:

1.       adding the word shape to the first paragraph of 3.5.3.2 in order to clarify that the "what" refers to an image, not to a carrier;

2.       adding an alternative to 3.5.3.2 allowing measurement of the sheet instead of measurement of the pictorial area;

3. adding new instructions, 3.5.3.3, 3.5.3.4 and 3.5.3.6 modeled on the treatment of maps in 3.5.2. These instructions will provide guidance on recording the dimensions of pictorial area of still images on multiple sheets of differing sizes, on folded sheets, and on multiple sheets intended to be viewed together ..."

LC/24: Revisions to instructions for production, publication, distribution and manufacture statements (2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10)
http://www.rda-jsc.org/docs/6JSC-LC-24.pdf

A biggie, proposing:

* Instructions within the production, publication, distribution, or manufacture elements about recording statements that contain grammatically inseparable information belonging to another element (e.g., Stereotyped, printed, and sold by H. & E. Phinney).

* Expanding the scope statement for each of the "name" sub-elements. A producer's, etc. "name" as it appears on the resource may refer to a person, family, or corporate body but not actually contain the proper name of a person, etc. In this context, the name may be a "characterizing word or phrase" (cf. 9.2.2.25), and there may be a statement of function with no name at all (cf. examples proposed for 2.8.4.4, 2.9.4.4, and 2.10.4.4) ...

* Deletion of restriction on recording statement of function and add instruction for recording statements of function with no name at 2.8.4.4 (Publisher's name: statement of function)

EURIG/Discussion2: Illustrative content and other augmentations: Discussion paper
http://www.rda-jsc.org/docs/6JSC-EURIG-Discussion-2.pdf

"EURIG supports FRBR Working Group on Aggregates' views as to the treatment of illustrative content and other augmentative contents, which consider any "augmenting material" to the "primary content" of a resource to be works in their own right, aggregated with the "primary content" at the manifestation level.

These "augmentations" can either be fully identified/described by means of specific records (Work record + Expression record, linking to the aggregating Manifestation record), or be reduced to a shortcut consisting in the relevant elements of description and access points (to the names of the persons or corporate bodies responsible for the augmentative part) within the Manifestation records."
