[DCRM-L] Usage poll

Another vote for "catalog record." I tend to use "bibliographic record" only in the context of distinguishing between that and the holdings record (as in, "We put copy-specific notes in the holdings record, but notes on the edition in the bibliographic record"), or to distinguish between a bib record and an authority record.

Cheers,

Margaret

It's all just semantics! I guess tend to only use "bibliographic record" for more book-like items. "Catalog record" when talking to non-librarians. But my overall preference is simply "metadata."

Just a question: are authority records not considered "catalog records"? They're a part of the catalog, and are becoming more important and integral to it all the time. I'd personally consider both authority records and bibliographic records to be catalog records, so contrasting the terminology "bibliographic record" with "catalog record" isn't really describing the same thing. On the issue of "catalog record" vs. "cataloging record" I agree with most everybody so far: "catalog record".

'Cataloging record' or 'Catalog record'?
