Yes, I see what you mean. Sounds like a proposal to add these subfields to the 581 would be a good thing. Here's some info I found on where and how to make such a proposal: http://www.loc.gov/marc/mac/advisory.html
Looking through the 5xx fields, the 588 has a subfield 5 and the 510 has a subfield u, but no field that approaches the function of the 581 seems to have both.

Does anyone else find MARC 581 too limiting for the purposes of rare materials cataloging? http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd581.html
Is there any reason that |u for online publications and |5 when the publication is about individual copies could not be added? Or is there another tag for this information that I'm missing?
