Good catch, Deborah! This change seems straightforward enough that it might not even require a formal proposal, just an email to the Network Development and MARC Standards Office asking them to add the subfields to the 581. If they find this at all problematic, they would ask for a more formal proposal or discussion paper.

Looking through the 5xx fields, the 588 has a subfield 5 and the 510 has a subfield u, but no field that approaches the function of the  581 seems to have both.

Does anyone else find MARC 581 too limiting for the purposes of rare materials cataloging? http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd581.html

Is there any reason that |u for online publications and |5 when the publication is about individual copies could not be added? Or is there another tag for this information that I'm missing?
