Colleagues,
Becky Culbertson just sent the email below.
The question is: For the BSR, should the 007 field always be required for rare textual materials (not just for microforms or other formats)?
I have my own thoughts on this, but would like to know what others think. Could you please get back to me by Monday 3/3 with any comments (or questions)?
Thanks!
Have a great weekend.
Nina

Subject: 007 field for rare materials
Nina,
SCS is bringing out a new version of the BSR in order to bring in rare materials elements from the dcrmg and dcrmm. During the review process we may be modifying slightly the instructions in the BSR re the 007 field.
Here is what we are proposing:
RDA instruction 3.3
Always record at least one Carrier Type in 338. For some other resource types, 007 field(s) may also be necessary. Consult the "Required Non-RDA and MARC Data" sections at the end of this document for 007 requirements.
In this "Required Non-RDA... " section on rare materials mentioned above on p.33 it looks like it would always be required. (Is this what is really meant? It seems to me as if it would be required for microforms of rare materials, but not otherwise?)
Here is the link to the BSR:

Thanks very much for your prompt attention to this. If you have any questions, just let me know. I very much appreciate all your help on the BSR especially on the dcrmg and dcrmm. Nancy Lorimer is busy working on the latter.
Becky
