[DCRM-L] 007 field for rare materials

Whoops, that post ended up being converted into plain-text. The excerpt from the BSR revisions to accommodate DCRM(G) that the RBMS Bib Standards Committee approved was the same 007 table as the current BSR for Rare Materials, but with two additional rows marked "(rare graphics only)" in the center column: Color (007/03), and Primary support material (007/04).

>From a systems point of view, I think the 007 should be required for everything always. The 007/00 would be much more useful in SQL queries and other programming if it always had data, and it's an easy thing to set defaults for it in a cataloging template for rare materials.

The 007 is required for graphic material, so the "Rare Materials" section of the BSR would still have it, just with "(rare graphics only)" as was done for the 007/03 and 007/04 (or "rare graphics and rare music only").

Here's an excerpt from the BSR revisions to accommodate DCRM(G) that the RBMS Bib Standards Committee approved:

Variable Control Fields – Physical Description Fixed Field

Category of material

007/00

Specific material designation

007/01

Color

(rare graphics only)

007/03

Primary support material

(rare graphics only)

007/04

I’m quite sure it was not the intent of the group that added the rare provisions to the BSR to require 007 in all rare material records. As far as I remember we never discussed the issue at all.

I note the main instruction to this section (p. 18) says “Use as many 006 and 007 fields as are appropriate for the resource.” Since the fields are not needed for most rare materials, I would think this general instruction would mean they aren’t required. I assume their presence in each of the format sections is a place holder just in case they’re needed. They aren’t needed for archival records, either, are they? Or notated music—are we required to include an 007 in a record for a score? The score records I’ve seen don’t routinely include 007.

Colleagues,

Becky Culbertson just sent the email below.

The question is: For the BSR, should the 007 field always be required for rare textual materials (not just for microforms or other formats)?

I have my own thoughts on this, but would like to know what others think. Could you please get back to me by Monday 3/3 with any comments (or questions)?

Thanks!

Have a great weekend.

Nina,

SCS is bringing out a new version of the BSR in order to bring in rare materials elements from the dcrmg and dcrmm. During the review process we may be modifying slightly the instructions in the BSR re the 007 field.

Here is what we are proposing:

RDA instruction 3.3
Always record at least one Carrier Type in 338. For some other resource types, 007 field(s) may also be necessary. Consult the “Required Non-RDA and MARC Data” sections at the end of this document for 007 requirements.

In this “Required Non-RDA… “ section on rare materials mentioned above on p.33 it looks like it would always be required. (Is this what is really meant? It seems to me as if it would be required for microforms of rare materials, but not otherwise?)

Here is the link to the BSR:

http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/scs/documents/PCC-RDA-BSR.pdf (see p. 33)

Thanks very much for your prompt attention to this. If you have any questions, just let me know. I very much appreciate all your help on the BSR especially on the dcrmg and dcrmm. Nancy Lorimer is busy working on the latter.
