[DCRM-L] Production Statement Proposal

As promised, here is the draft of a discussion paper concerning the use of transcription in RDA's Production Statement (not Publication Statement, as a typo in my previous note implied). We hope to present the discussion paper for the upcoming meeting of CC:DA at Annual, as a joint-proposal of the RBMS and ARLIS/NA liaisons.
The draft is plenty rough, so please don't hesitate to suggest major changes (and minor ones).
Assorted notes:
· This is a discussion paper, not a revision proposal. If encouraged, a revision proposal would follow.
· You'll see that we offer a lengthy argument for why transcription is not the preferred method for describing unpublished resources. The arguments echo principles stated in the introductory sections of DCRM(Mss).
· We provide examples at the end. This placement may not be ideal. We welcome suggestions for how to better integrate them.
· Keep in mind that Date of Production is the only element of the Production Statement that is core in RDA. We do not recommend any changes in this regard.
· We acknowledge-and partially support-the BL proposal (subject of last week's thread) but only lightly integrate its ideas into our own recommendations. We do not comment on the possibility of condensing the Production Statement into a single transcribed element. In fact, our assumption is that 2.7 (Production Statement) would remain divided into distinct sub-elements. So, in the event that our discussion paper and the BL paper both receive support, some compromise might have to be made.
We look forward to your feedback.
Thanks,
Francis

Hi, Marie-Chantal.
The timing of your question is perfect. Elizabeth O'Keefe and I are working on a discussion paper (for CC:DA) to address RDA's Publication Statement (for unpublished resources). In our paper, we plan to present several revision options, one of which will be rooted in the principles of the BL discussion paper.
Liz and I will share the paper with this list next week, with hopes for constructive feedback.
Best,
Francis

The proposal is interesting but I would like to know more about how unpublished items would be handled ... It seems to me that the principle of « issuance » is not general enough to apply to documents such as artefacts or natural objects ... Does it mean that for unpublished items, we would not transcribe any « production » statement, but only record controlled terms for place and date of production???

I am also in favor of this new approach for several reasons and look forward to the full proposal. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Francis,
I?ve finally had a chance to look at this, and think that streamlining the rules for recording publication statements is a great idea. There are likely manifestations that won?t fit so neatly into the examples given, but hopefully the full proposal will provide details.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Subject: [DCRM-L] Publication (etc.) statements -- BL proposal
To kick off the 2014 RDA revision proposal season, I?d like to draw your attention to a discussion paper that Alan Danskin, British Library representative to the JSC, has kindly shared (in preliminary form):
http://www.slainte.org.uk/eurig/docs/EURIG2014/2014_EURIG-AM_presentation_Proposals-for-simplification-of-RDA%202.7-2.10_Danskin.pdf
The proposal suggests a radical (?) rethinking of how we record Publication (etc.) statements. Although I have several small concerns, I think the suggested changes would be a move in the right direction.
I?d like to hear your thoughts on this new approach. Assuming that the discussion paper goes through the standard channels, CC:DA will prepare a response to it in late summer. The Powerpoint linked here is just a summary; the full proposal will presumably have more details.
Best,
Francis
