[DCRM-L] Northern Ireland (and not just England, Scotland and Wales) in 752

Dear Erin,

I don't know about a campaign as such but as it happens Alan Danskin (British Library representative to the Joint Steering Committee for the Development of RDA (JSC)) told me a few weeks ago that JSC had discussed the issue a few years ago in relation to jurisdictions and the UK Legal Deposit Libraries opposed a change from Great Britain to United Kingdom on grounds of cost.

In response to the earlier discussion on the list about the 752 field, as far as the ESTC is concerned, we have always used the full hierarchy, i.e. "$aGreat Britain $b England $d London," and we intend to go on like this for now.

Kind regards,

Iris O'Brien

Subject: [DCRM-L] Northern Ireland (and not just England,Scotland and Wales) in 752

Does anyone know if there's ever been a campaign to get "United Kingdom" instead of "Great Britain" as the authorized form of the name in the Library of Congress Authorities file?

Our practice is to use LC-NAF as our source for the 752, and to start with the top order political jurisdiction. Unfortunately, that means we end up with things like "752 $a Great Britain $b Northern Ireland $d Belfast" which is just plain wrong.

Maybe time for us to switch to the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names as our source?

Having our users search on "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" and getting "See: Great Britain" as the result is embarrassing.

EB.
