Jackie,

This is great news – thank you. Please let the OCLC folks to bear in mind that some fields do double duty in archival vs. rare book/graphic material cataloging: I’m thinking specifically the Provenance fields 541, Immediate source of Acquisition, 561 Ownership history and in some cases 563 Binding Information.

Archival materials are by definition unique and these fields are appropriately included in the Master Records, whether or not the cataloging intuition codes them as $5. They are *copy* specific for anything that exists in multiple manifestations of course and should be coded subfield 5 in book and graphics and some photographic records.

Happy New Year to all at OCLC

Subject: [DCRM-L] Placeholder response from OCLC re copy-specific data in WorldCat master records

Greetings of the season, everyone--

We at OCLC all sat up and took note of last week's DCRM-L energetic discussion of your various practices regarding copy-specific data. Our metadata quality team currently working on revising Bibliographic Formats and Standards, section 3.5, “Copy- or Institution-Specific Notes and Access Points” (http://oc.lc/79i8Si), to be more specific about preferred practices. The revision will focus on when it is appropriate to add such information to the master record, and when it is preferable to use WorldShare Metadata local bibliographic record capabilities or local holdings data to record copy- or institution-specific data. A draft version will be released for comment in early January, and you'll be among the first to see it.

We look forward to your input after we distribute the revised section.

In the meantime, wishing you all a wonderful round of holidays!

All my best wishes, Jackie

-
