[DCRM-L] RDA BSR now covers DCRM(B, G, M) but has an odd 007/00 note

I can confirm that 007/00 is always used for graphics, so your proposed "Use for rare graphics and for microform reproductions of rare materials" sounds right to me.

Thanks,

Erin.

I'm now seeing that the end of the BSR has a section on "Supplemental Requirements for the Digital Aspects of Format" so I don't think digital reproductions need to be mentioned on p.35 at all.

Also, rereading the original message and poking around in documentation, it looks like an 007/00 would be used for a microfilm reproduction of a score but not for the original printed/manuscript score itself, similar to what is done for books. But for graphics, the 007/00 would always be used. (I am most definitely not a music or graphics cataloger though so please let me know if that is not correct!).

So, maybe the easiest thing to do would be to make it: "Use for rare graphics and for microform reproductions of rare materials."

The table header itself makes it clear enough that "rare materials" in the BSR context means books, graphics, and notated music. And it would also cover the manuscripts cataloged using DCRM(G) and DCRM(M). The BSR will eventually be expanded to also include materials covered by DCRM(C) and DCRM(MSS), once those documents are approved for use; further revisions to the BSR will be made at that time. I think it was probably a little premature to add DCRM(M) to the BSR last April, given that it has not been published yet (as far as I know), but hopefully it will be available soon.

How about adding "manuscripts", which are often reproduced in microform or digital form?

Use for rare graphics, rare music, and microform or digital reproductions of rare books and manuscripts

All,

I'm working on some revisions to the BSR for the PCC Standing Committee on Standards and remembered this message from last April.

Does this sound right as replacement text for the garbled 007/00 row under Rare Materials on p.35?:

CURRENT:
See requirements in separate sections for Graphic Materials. Notated use “h”

REVISION:
Use for rare graphics, rare music, and microform or digital reproductions of rare books.

Thanks,
Manon

Just re-read what I wrote about the BSR, and realized it's unclear. Here's a translation: the Rare Materials 007 should have been changed so that the section only applies graphics, and to microforms of books and music. Something went wrong, because the new wording doesn't make sense.

In case I'm not the only one who wasn't paying attention, the 15 April 2014 revision of the RDA BSR is out. See http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/scs/documents/PCC-RDA-BSR.pdf . Yay!

The 007/00 instruction note for "Rare Materials (Books, Graphics, and Notated Music)" on page 35 has become garbled, though. It says "See requirements in separate sections for Graphic Materials. Notated use “h”" -- and neither of those makes sense.

It looks like something got mixed up when the BSR was being modified so that 007 for Rare Materials only applies to graphics, microform notated music, and microform textual monographs.

I have a pretty good idea what ought to be there, but before writing something out, I wondered if someone was already on it. Any idea?

Thanks,

Erin.
