About the Position:

The Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America<http://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/schlesinger-library/about-library> seeks applications for the position of Associate Head of Collection Services, Print and Published Materials.  This position holds primary responsibility for the overall administration and management of the Print/Published Material division of the Collection Services Department, including acquisitions, cataloging, physical processing and collection maintenance in accordance with national and international standards. With the finest collection of resources for research on the history of women in America, the library's holdings are strong in: women's rights and feminism, health and sexuality, work and family life, education and the professions, and culinary history and etiquette.

Responsibilities of the position include:

*         Ensuring selected material is accessioned and cataloged, is physically housed according to preservation standards and is maintained in its respective space by managing and providing overall supervision and guidance to a team  of professional and non-professional staff.

*         Maintaining and monitoring assigned budgets.

*         Working closely with the curator of published material, library assistant, and the financial associate to ensure that budgeted book funds are allocated and spent within limits, payments are processed in a timely manner and payment records in library systems are reconciled with financial records.

*         Advising on library-wide decisions, policies and priorities, and staff issues, maintaining statistics, contributing to short and long-range planning for the library, etc.

*         Serving as a member of the library's program management and supervisory teams.

*         Serves on Schlesinger and Harvard Library-wide teams or committees, as assigned.

*         Reviewing and suggesting changes necessary to upgrade practices

The successful candidate will possess:


*         ALA-accredited MLS (Master's in Library Science).

*         Four years of professional cataloging experience in an academic, research or special collections library, applying current cataloging standards (including RDA/LC-PCC PS, AACR2/LCRI, CONSER, BIBCO, DCRM, LCSH, LCGFT, RBMS controlled vocabularies, MARC21, etc.)

*         Four years of supervisory experience in training and supervising cataloging staff and creating documentation.

*         Demonstrated ability to problem solve and to plan and lead cataloging projects for a variety of formats including books, serials, audiovisual, ephemera, and born digital.

*         Advanced understanding of subject and historical background of special collections.

*         Both conceptual and detailed knowledge of catalog data, with strong analytical skills and the ability to work with, analyze, and present the data in various formats, using automated library systems as well as standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, calendaring, etc.)

*         Ability to communicate with curators and research services staff about cataloging issues and to work with them in providing sound bibliographic services.

*         Strong written, verbal, and listening skills.

*         Strong interpersonal skills, team leading ability, open to innovation, good judgment.

*         Ability to learn new tasks quickly and accurately and work well with others in a complex and dynamic environment.
