Dear Colleagues,
The Controlled Vocabularies Community Discussion Blog has been updated with posts for 12 new terms:

1. Nine are part of the Genre Term Scope Note project, with new scope notes added:
*         Funeral addresses
*         Funeral sermons
*         Gallows speeches
*         Gazetteers
*         Ghost stories
*         Glossaries
*         Gothic novels
*         Plays
*         Slave narratives

2. Three terms have been modified in preparation for the upcoming integration of the six RBMS thesauri planned for this spring. The term Cipher/Ciphers in various forms appeared in three different vocabularies: Genre, Paper and Provenance, and the CV editors are suggesting new terms and modified scope notes and hierarchies to clearly disambiguate, so that once the merge has taken place, there will be no confusion.

*         Ciphers  [in Genre Terms]

* Cipher watermarks [in Paper Terms]

* Codes (provenance) [in Provenance Evidence]

3. Three terms are Relationship Designators, originally posted on March 30, for which the comment period has been extended to May 20, 2016. In the course of their work to reconsider DCRM in light of RDA, and draft a more concise set of cataloging guidelines for rare materials cataloging only where deviation from RDA is necessary or where RDA requires elaboration, the DCRM-RDA Task Force has requested new definitions/redefinitions of the relationship designators publisher, printer, and bookseller. The Task Force found the RDA definition of publisher to be unsatisfactory, in part because it makes no mention of financial responsibility in the function of publishing. The TF also wanted the scope of the terms printer, publisher, and bookseller to be consistent, no matter the time period.

*         publisher

*         printer

*         bookseller

The comment period for all terms runs from May 12 to May 20, 2016. CV welcomes and encourages your feedback. Let us hear from you on our blog at http://rbms.info/cv-comments/

With thanks,
Jane Carpenter and Ryan Hildebrand, Co-Chairs
Amy F. Brown, Genre Terms Scope Note Project Leader
