General Summary:
The University of Chicago Library is seeking an innovative and forward-thinking individual for the position of Metadata Librarian for Music and Special Collections, with responsibility for original cataloging and creation of metadata for music scores, sound recordings, media and digital resources; and special collections materials in all subjects and European languages. This position splits time evenly between the Technical Services Department and the Special Collections Research Center.

The Metadata Librarian will provide leadership and coordination for the metadata provision for the University of Chicago Library's collection of music resources and special collections materials.. The Metadata Librarian performs Descriptive Cataloging for Rare Materials (DCRM) level cataloging for Special Collections materials (print and manuscript), provides original and complex copy cataloging for music materials according to Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) standards, and develops and implements cataloging workflows to improve discoverability of materials. The Metadata Librarian will be involved in national and local activities related to implementation of BIBFRAME and linked data, and provide strategic direction on metadata standards for the Library's music and special collections resources.

Essential Functions:
Performs original and complex copy cataloging of music, manuscript materials and rare books with all associated authority work, according to the following standards: Resource Description and Access (RDA) via RDA Toolkit; Library of Congress-PCC Policy Statements; National standards pertaining to providing access to music resources; Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials Standards, vocabularies, and other national standards for rare materials cataloging; Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging (BIBCO/NACO/SACO/CONSER); Library of Congress Classification via Classweb

Designs, implements and reviews workflows and policies around the metadata creation for special collections and music materials

Engages in professional service activities and contributes to the development of local, national, and international metadata standards and applications related to music and special collections

Required Qualifications:
Library/Information Science degree from an ALA accredited institution

Bachelor's or advanced degree in music

Subject degree in a humanities or social science discipline

Minimum of two years of successful experience in original cataloging and metadata services in a special collections in a research library and/or working with music materials.

Knowledge of current standards and systems including MARC21, AACR2, RDA, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, OCLC Connexion, and library management and discovery systems

Knowledge of current trends, resources, and methodologies in cataloging and metadata as they relate to description and use of music, rare books, manuscripts, and special collections materials, including Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials Standards

Reading knowledge and ability to catalog materials in two or more non-English European languages

Flexibility about performing different metadata tasks as library needs change, and willingness to work on special projects or assignments

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience contributing to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (BIBCO, NACO, SACO, CONSER); Knowledge of German and/or Latin; Experience applying non-MARC metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core); Understanding of linked data principles, including RDF and ontologies as well as emerging metadata standards (e.g., BIBFRAME) and identity management systems (e.g., ISNI, VIAF, ORCID)
