Minutes recorded by Whitney Buccicone.

The Technical Services Discussion Group met from 2:30 to 3:30 with 25 people attending. There were two topics of conversation.

The first topic was interdepartmental relationships and workflow integration. During this discussion, three nodes of conversation emerged: methods of feedback between departments; facilitating communication between departments and some of the ways people do that; and the process of reviewing and integrating inter-departmental workflows. Many tactics were discussed that encouraged positive relationships between departments, but of particular interest to the group were regular meetings between technical and public service departments and open documentation that is regularly updated. Some issues that arise in these relationships often focus around communication and lack of clear priorities and expectations.

The second topic was the charge and structure of the Technical Services Discussion. There was a general agreement that attendees wished to broaden the scope of the charge <http://rbms.info/rbms_manual/discussion_groups/#technical_services> to better reflect different aspects of technical services beyond cataloging and to eliminate the word "automation" from the charge. Additionally, we discussed potentially experimenting with on-line conversations. Attendees indicated that they greatly value the in-person aspect of the discussion group but were amenable to experimenting with on-line discussions.

Updating the Technical Services Discussion Group charge<http://rbms.info/rbms_manual/discussion_groups/#technical_services> was also discussed. Attendees agreed that it was time to revise the current charge to a more relevant one. See addendum below for the chance to give feedback on new charge. Once finalized, this will be submitted to the Executive Committee before ALA Annual. The co-conveners will also reach out to ALCTS which regularly has e-forums to request more information on how this is done. They will communicate with membership about the when and how of this pilot e-forum.

Addendum: the co-conveners have drafted a new charge and invite feedback and comments via Google document: proposed charge change for the RBMS Technical Services Discussion Group<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KXGHqR-PDe4C80jyD3HRWKg7dNBqpQsZrBIoA6DWyk8/edit?usp=sharing> or email (atims at mwa.org or bucciw at uw.edu).
