Dear Colleagues,

Two years ago, following the dissolution of the Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials Task Force, the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee took on the task of completing the RBMS Policy Statements to accompany RDA. At the time, however, much of the work was on hold waiting for the release of the Beta RDA Toolkit following the RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign Project (3R).

The stabilized beta version of the RDA Toolkit is now available. The Beta RDA Toolkit implemented some significant changes, which warrant a re-examination of the best format for future rare materials cataloging guidance. At this time, the RBMS Policy State Subgroup is soliciting feedback from the rare materials cataloging community on what format future guidance should take. Detailed background, discussion of potential formats, and next steps are available in the report for the RBMS Policy Statements<http://rbms.info/files/committees/bibliographic_standards/conference-docs/RBMS_PS_report_2019a.pdf>.

There will be two opportunities to provide feedback during ALA Annual:

  * RBMS Policy Statements Editorial Group Meeting<https://eventscribe.com/2019/ALA-Annual/fsPopup.asp?Mode=PresInfo&PresentationID=519176>, Sunday, June 23, 8:30-10:00 am, Marriott Marquis, Salon 13
  * Technical Services Discussion Group<https://www.eventscribe.com/2019/ALA-Annual/fsPopup.asp?Mode=presInfo&PresentationID=519184>, Sunday, June 23, 2:30-3:30 pm, Marriott Marquis, Dupont Circle

You may also send feedback directly to the RBMS Policy Statement Editor, Michelle Mascaro (mmascaro at ucsd.edu<mailto:mmascaro at ucsd.edu>), and incoming co-editor, Elizabeth Hobart (efh7 at psu.edu<mailto:efh7 at psu.edu>). There will be additional virtual opportunities to provide feedback following the conference.

Thank you all for your feedback. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Michelle & Elizabeth.
