[DCRM-L] Subdividing Genre Terms

The place recorded in 752 (publication place) isn’t always the same as a place recorded in a 655 subdivision, though (for example, woodcuts might have been created in Germany whereas the book was printed/published in France)—do you have other provisions for recording other kinds of places in the record? And what about dates you might have otherwise recorded as a subdivision?

Yes, our records use 752 for place of publication (or production, in the case of manuscripts, drawings, etc.). Fully-cataloged records go to the city level. Preliminary records are periodically batch-updated to pull the place from the 008 (where "periodically" currently means "once in a blue moon").

Hi Erin,
By elsewhere in the record are you referring to the 752 and perhap other 6xxs?

We stopped subdividing 655s in 2014, but it wasn't just in anticipation of linked data. It was also in anticipation of faceted check-boxes appearing in a side-bar (which we are only now about to get, in 2022!) and to avoid duplication of effort: since places and dates appear in standardized form elsewhere in the record.
That being said, we still subdivide manuscripts by century, at the request of the Curator of Manuscripts.

For those that made a practice of subdividing genre headings (RBMS, GMGPC terms in particular), are you continuing to do so? Or have you stopped in anticipation of the switch to linked data?
Best,
