Hi Erin,
I have some experience with the 340 field, although it is not a field I would manually code for an original record. I have seen the 340 on a handful of records from OCLC for the rare materials that I catalog at NYU.
It is typically coded as follows:
*340* *##**$m*4to*$2*rdabf
The 340 field would duplicate the information contained in 300 $c if you have indicated both format and shelf-dimensions in that subfield.
It is not indexed in our OPAC (Aleph) at all.

In our public catalog, HOLLIS, the 255 and 340 display on their own lines under description; these are displayed in MARC field order.
Probably more useful to patrons is the use of 034 data to generate a map in the display. Both 255 and 034 data are displayed on this record, Plan of Boston comprising a part of Charlestown and Cambridge<http://id.lib.harvard.edu/alma/990093702390203941/catalog>. I believe that this explanation of geospatial data in our public catalog<https://wiki.harvard.edu/confluence/x/gYTyCg> is visible to external users.
