Position Summary
The Rubenstein Library is recruiting for 2 Rare Materials Catalogers. The Rare Materials Cataloger is responsible for the description of printed materials in all formats and single manuscript items, according to international standards and best practices, for the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library. They collaborate with staff across the library to ensure ideal descriptive outcomes for rare materials. They are a member of the Rare Materials Cataloging Section in the Rubenstein Library Technical Services (RLTS) Department.
Responsibilities

  *   Creates complex bibliographic description for single items in all formats (books, maps, manuscripts, visual materials, etc.) and in multiple languages; ensures the quality of bibliographic records through compliance with international and local standards, including the Rubenstein Library's Guiding Principles for Description<https://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/about/technical-services-department/how-we-describe>; performs related research as necessary, inputs and edits bibliographic, holdings, and item information into the Integrated Library System (ILS); enhances or replaces OCLC records within established guidelines; assigns Library of Congress Classification call numbers; constructs authorized headings in accordance with RDA and PCC; manages holdings information and reporting to electronic union catalogs.
  *   In consultation with the Head of the Rare Materials Cataloging Section, documents policies and workflows for the description of and metadata management for rare materials; researches and maintains knowledge of best practices and emerging standards for the description of rare materials in all formats.
  *   Serves as expert in ILS functionality and other industry software used to manage data; assists in managing Rubenstein data in the ILS; performs batch data clean-up of bibliographic, holdings and items records as needed;
  *   Assists with planning and management of short and long-term cataloging projects and their physical workflows; assists in the coordination of Rubenstein cataloging projects with other departments in Duke University Libraries. Collaborates with RLTS Archival Processing Section staff and RL Collection Development staff as needed to coordinate joint processing/cataloging projects and their workflows.
  *   Displays continuing growth in subject knowledge of rare materials cataloging, linked data, and other trends in the field. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity; reviews professional literature and participates in activities to stay informed about trends in supporting research in academic research institutions.
  *   Implements special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
  *   Participates in RL reference desk rotations, including occasional Saturday shifts.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  *   Supervises student workers
  *   May supervise one or more interns

Qualifications

Education:
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program or a combination of relevant education and experience.
Experience:
Required: Candidates should have one or more years of library work experience to obtain specialized knowledge of library systems and procedures; reading knowledge of at least one non-English foreign language, with an aptitude for working with materials in a range of foreign languages; and familiarity with metadata, description, and classification standards, such as RDA, DCRM suite, MARC21 formats, and LC classification. Candidates should be attentive to detail and extremely organized; adaptive to working in a dynamic environment prone to change; demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; able to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team; demonstrate commitment to providing outstanding customer service.

Preferred: We encourage applications from candidates who have: experience cataloging printed materials in an academic, research or public library setting utilizing RDA and DCRM suite; formal training in rare books cataloging, descriptive bibliography, and/or relevant professional special collections experience; knowledge of software used to manage metadata such as OCLC Connexion, ALMA, and MARC Edit. Additional preferred qualifications include: experience cataloging serials/continuing resources; experience creating NACO authority records; reading knowledge of multiple non-English foreign languages.

Working Conditions

  *   Frequently works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  *   Normal office environment
  *   Frequently moves library materials weighing up to and over 5 pounds
  *   Position requires onsite work much of the workweek
  *   Occasional weekend shifts required
  *   Occasional travel required

Salary and Benefits

We are committed to transparency and fairness in our hiring practice. The hiring range for this position is firm at $57,222 - $82,400.  Offers will reflect the candidate's years of experience, rank at appointment, and internal equity.
