[DCRM-L] Access to WorldCat Search API 1.0 ends 31 December 2024

Hello everyone,

I am sending this message on behalf of my colleagues.

Access to version 1.0 of the WorldCat Search API<https://www.oclc.org/developer/api/oclc-apis/worldcat-search-api.en.html> will end on 31 December 2024. Many libraries with an OCLC Cataloging and Metadata subscription use this API to extract data from WorldCat for use and retention in a local library system. The API enables actions like determining if their library owns an item or enhancing local records with MARC data from WorldCat.  

Since this API was introduced 15 years ago, we’ve released new services and more contemporary, full-featured APIs that provide superior user experiences and deliver the functionality today’s users expect. The WorldCat Search API 2.0, along with other OCLC APIs and services, now provide enhanced features that surpass the capabilities of the WorldCat Search API 1.0.

Here are some advantages offered by our newer APIs:

1.     Increased security. Our contemporary authentication technology patterns ensure a higher level of security for your library's data.

2.     Uniform data model. We have adopted JSON as the standard format for data exchange, making it easier to understand and work with.

3.     Enhanced features. Our newer APIs offer features like facets and access to additional library data, enabling seamless integration with today's discovery interfaces.

4.     Additional search options. We have expanded search options and indexes, allowing for more precise and efficient searching.

If your library currently relies on version 1.0 of the WorldCat Search API, it is crucial that you transition to an alternate solution by 31 December 2024. We understand this may require some adjustments, and we are here to support you throughout the process.
