WorldCat Entities URIs for Organizations will be added as $1 links in 110, 610 and 710 bibliographic fields, beginning Monday, October 14, 2024.

OCLC continues to make significant advances in integrating linked data into your cataloging and metadata workflows. One way we do this is by enriching WorldCat bibliographic records with WorldCat Entities URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers)-work that has been ongoing since December 2023.

To date, we've added more than 400 million WorldCat Entities URIs to bibliographic records for Persons, Places, Events and Works, and we're pleased to announce that we'll begin adding URIs for Organizations as $1 links in 110, 610 and 710 bibliographic fields beginning October Monday, October 14, 2024. The process to add the $1 URI will start with 610 headings, identified as FAST, and will then progress to add $1's to 110 and 710 headings.

There's no action you need to take - the new data will be included in WorldCat records you export using OCLC cataloging applications. Retaining WorldCat Entities URIs in MARC records contributes to the linked data future for libraries. You can also receive enriched records by enabling the WorldCat Updates feature "Receive updates when $1 is modified" in WorldShare Collection Manager.

Why are we doing this work?

Publishing existing library information as linked data supports better description and discovery of library resources across the web. Enriching WorldCat bibliographic records with WorldCat Entities URIs establishes a bridge between MARC data and linked data, providing a starting point for connecting data across local systems and workflows and for using linked data functionality in local discovery systems.

What are WorldCat Entities URIs?

WorldCat Entities is a set of authoritative data that establishes the context for bibliographic data curation with URIs for a variety of entities, including Works, Persons, Places, Organizations, Events, and more. The connections built in WorldCat Entities are semantic-like linking a work to locations it's set in. You can already explore more than 150 million WorldCat Entities at entities.oclc.org<https://entities.oclc.org/worldcat/entity>.
