Dear colleagues,
The RBMS Controlled Vocabularies Editorial Group's current working group, Western Bias in CVRMC, is seeking new members to join the group, which began meeting this past year. The working group is open to anyone who is interested in controlled vocabularies, regardless of CVEG or RBMS membership status.
The Western Bias working group is looking holistically at the Controlled Vocabulary for Rare Materials Cataloging (CVRMC) to identify areas for revision or expansion and to make recommendations for further action. Currently the group is reviewing terms mainly in non-genre areas of the thesaurus, such as paper and binding terms. The goal is to review terms and revise as necessary, such as suggesting scope notes, new preferred terms, or avenues for more specialized research if necessary. The group is considering "Western bias" both as terms that prioritize, elevate, or normalize Western European/Anglo-American objects, concepts, or practices as well as terms that essentialize, simplify, obscure, or overgeneralize non-Western objects, concepts, or practices.
If you are interested in volunteering to join this group, please fill out this interest form<https://forms.gle/yWaz1KQMbBLsKm3h7> by July 15, and feel free to share with others who may be interested as well. If you have any questions, you can also reach out to vocabularies at rbms.info<mailto:vocabularies at rbms.info>.
Thank you!
