Subject: [PCCLIST] ALA Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) Working Group Opposing the Removal of $v (Form Subdivisions) from Subject Headings in "Modern MARC" is looking for members
(Apologies in advance for cross-posting.)
The ALA Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) Working Group Opposing the Removal of $v (Form Subdivisions) from Subject Headings in "Modern MARC" (apologies for the long group name!) is looking for members.
This working group will promote awareness of the Library of Congress policy to not include $v (form subdivisions) in subject headings as part of "modern MARC"; and will advocate for a reversal of that policy and retention of $v. Particular attention will be paid to investigating the effects of this change for non-academic libraries, articulating the usefulness of $v for users, and highlighting the negative impacts of the loss of this subfield.
We're hoping for feedback from as broad a swath of libraries as possible: whether your library knew that the Library of Congress would be removing $v from subject headings for new records; the utility of subjects with $v for your patrons; what the impact of this change is for your patrons (in the catalog, in reference work, etc.); whether you have the resources/ability to add back missing $v information if you think it's important for your patrons; and so on.
And we'd love anyone interested to join the group! You don't have to be a SAC member to participate. Broad library membership and advocacy might be useful here, to best advocate for a reversal of the policy and the retention of $v in subjects.
Anyone interested, please contact working group chair Deborah Tomaras (Deborah.Tomaras at marist.edu<mailto:Deborah.Tomaras at marist.edu>). Thanks in advance for considering joining and/or giving feedback to help out!
Best,
Deborah Tomaras (she/her)
