[DCRM-L] Possible error/variant: OCLC#5719681/ESTC R11411 (Master Rigby's speech...)

Actually, ESTC records are usually based on the first copy reported, sometimes enhanced from later reports.

In this case, the copy on which the record was based is the British Library copy (designated “Primary”), but it’s unclear what the basis for declaring the first leaf to be blank is.

Both copies reproduced have the unsigned title page followed by A2 and A3, suggesting that if there’s a blank, it would be A4, and that there is no integral blank preceding the title leaf.

Of even more interest, though, is the fact that the two copies reproduced (from the Huntington Library and the British Library) have variant devices (or vignettes) on the title page, though the setting appears otherwise identical. The Canterbury holdings also document this variation.

Thanks, Seth for bringing this up - the record will be revised, probably to paging of [2], 4, unless a copy with a verified blank A4 is discovered. You can add your holding, but please mention which device you have on the title page.

Looking at other records and the online scans available in ProQuest, I would wager that the [4] pages in this OCLC # is the result of a cataloger counting an additional front flyleaf of a rebound copy, another blank leaf in part of a bound-with volume, or the blank [A1] and [A4] as the [4] pages. I would not count this as a variant but perhaps notify ESTC of the pagination anomaly.

The ESTC record gives pagination as [4], 4, but the signing pattern suggests that there should be [2] pages at the end to account for leaf A4 (missing in my copy). Would others consider this a variant and create a new record, or update an existing one to reflect a (possible) ideal copy?
