The Annual Conference of the American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies will be held April 1-3, 2027 in Portland, Oregon. We are seeking proposals for a panel of special collections professionals and students offering papers and/or presentations featuring special collections, specifically materials from the 18th century.
The eighteenth century was a time of travel and discovery. Visitors to the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere encountered people and places they could never have imagined -- new cultures, different species of plants and animals, challenging weather and terrain. The interactions between people of different cultures were sometimes mutually beneficial and sometimes tragic. The plants and animals they encountered were intriguing but were often misused and misappropriated. The climate and the terrain posed challenges that resulted in equal parts failures and successes. Librarians and others who work to maintain eighteenth century materials -- to keep them safe and make them available to researchers -- have a particular perspective on the significance of not only the materials themselves, but their special place in history and cultural development. We encourage presentations on the collections of eighteenth-century materials with a particular emphasis on indigenous peoples, natural resources, natural phenomena, and the acclimation of others to new and different environments.
Please use the submission portal for your proposal: https://www.xcdsystem.com/asecs/member/index.cfm. A more detailed description of the conference can be found on the conference website: 2027 Annual Meeting - ASECS<https://asecs.org/2027-annual-meeting/>.
