[DCRM-L] Boundwiths in Alma

Hi Anna (and all),

I've attached a copy of our boundwith procedures, created by my colleagues Simon Hunt and Jasmine Rizer after we migrated from Voyager to Alma back in 2017. This document covers both monograph & serial boundwiths.

We make a host record with 773s for each title/MMSID contained in the boundwith. The host bib record is suppressed from public view, but its holdings record is left unsuppressed. Each constituent record then gets a suppressed "dummy" (empty) holdings record showing a "Bound" location, with an empty/unbarcoded item. In our OPAC, when a patron searches for a title contained within a boundwith, they would see the bib record for that title, but the boundwith host's holdings show up. We use public z-notes in the holdings to state that a particular title "is bound with [a list of other titles in the boundwith]."

Here are a few examples of how boundwiths appear in our OPAC:

The thrips, or Thysanoptera, of Illinois<https://galileo-uga.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01GALI_UGA/1bvcvhk/alma9932858513902959> - this title is just part of a basic boundwith containing several titles of an analyzed serial. I'm struggling to think of a more rare book-y example off the top of my head, but it would be pretty much the same format.

Vescovadi cattolici della Grecia<https://galileo-uga.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01GALI_UGA/1bvcvhk/alma991208703902959> - this is a bit more complex: a monoset spread across several nonconsecutive issues of an analyzed serial. Each individual volume of the monoset is contained within a different boundwith volume alongside other titles in the parent series. In the holdings 866s, we showed how each volume of Vescovadi... corresponded to its volume in the parent series, Orientalia Christiana analecta.

Poe newsletter / Poe studies<https://galileo-uga.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01GALI_UGA/1bvcvhk/alma9944503233902959> - this is a serial title change that was bound together in a single volume; click on the "related title" holdings to view the notes explaining the title change.

Feel free to reach out with any questions, or if anything is unclear, and I'll do my best to explain further. Despite being one of the de facto boundwith people tasked with cleaning up our messy, broken records post-migration over the past 5 years, I know these can be tricky to deal with on a practical and conceptual level. Good luck!!

I’ve used the $3 in a 773 to specify which copies/issues go with which 773 in Alma. It didn’t seem to cause any display or linking problems, as far as I can remember. Also, we used a 590 to describe the bound-withs textually, which helped keep things clear for the user.

Hello all,

We recently migrated from Horizon to Alma, and I am still trying to figure out the best way to handle more complicated boundwiths/sammelbands. I hope some other rare book catalogers can help.

We started using a 773 in constituent bib records, linking back to the host record, which is the only one with visible holdings/items records. This has worked for straightforward monographs bound together. However, it gets a lot more complicated with multiple copies and multiple item records, especially periodicals bound together. I have been experimenting with different methods but I would like to hear what other Alma users are doing, and where you have had success or difficulties.

Has anyone found a good solution? We also need to fix the already cataloged boundwiths that migrated over since in Horizon all of this was handled in the item record with the much missed linking barcode field.

Finally, I am interested in doing a panel at RBMS 2024 about how different libraries and library systems handle boundwiths, whether that's sammelbands or any other separate bibs sharing an item record. I added it to the collaboration spreadsheet<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NERocf2VE2fMyBWMxBY-j6Uy8HrH07hynScCPEropGw/edit*gid=0__;Iw!!PhOWcWs!0TF8qEBlDmje1rDpGocxnkT4Sq5O-Ixb_V8SOxVxwH3VBQjVq4LWDdn9lKmYLWUaOdUrOMlzJgCKkcAIIA$>. The topic could be expanded to other unique formats where the physical item and system are at odds, or how you have had to change cataloging practices based on a library management system. Please let me know if you're interested!

Thanks,

Anna
