[DCRB-L] General principles: scope

Aha, an interesting idea. I have only read Deborah's message once
thru, but let me propose a slight alternative to this good idea, just
to put another idea "out there". How about having the GPs provide the
overview for all formats and let each manual provide specifics as to
the how some of the principles may differ or relate in the format being
addressed? (This is really only a slight alternative, in my view, to
what Deborah is suggesting. The way I see this is a point-by-point
expansion of the GPs, but separate from them.) I suggest this not
(necessarily) as an advocate of "the other formats", but simply because
Joe's GPs draft (*after* p. 1) aligns itself with FRBR, which itself
also tries to cover all formats (and seems to do so fairly
successfully).

Here's how I see that this might work. In each manual, the GPs remain
a document which covers all formats (I believe it should exist in a
"pure" state). A subsequent prefatory addendum (hmmmm, it's not meant
to sound that "wild", but I thought I'd play with those terms a little
bit) would specify how they apply to the format in that specific
manual. Using DJL's expansion for proposal (d), here's a mock-up of
what I mean:

[Intro for all manuals:] GPs (as finalized)

	(then, next--)

[Expansion for the format, e.g.]: GPs for Books

(a) ....
(b) ....
(c) ....
(d) 1.	Full statements of extent, accounting for every leaf in
the text block.
         2.	Bibliographic format included in size measurement
   	 3.	Guidance for specific notes of bibliographical
significance, such as signature statements, descriptions of
typographical features, &c.
  	 4.	Encouragement for added entries for printers,
booksellers, &c.
(e) ....
(f) ....
etc.

(Hope this is clear. This is one problem with trying to having
planning discussions over e-mail. Tho' I think we do quite well with
it generally; any lack of clarity here is mine.)

materials covered in DCRM (books, music, maps, serials, mss). While
most of Joe's draft seems to indicate this broader coverage, the very
first page contains some more limiting statements which I would like to
request be made more broad.

principles for cataloging rare _materials_ along with more specific
applications for the cataloging of rare books. Where I would like to
see the principles developed is in the direction of specifics for rare
books. One way it could be done is to expand each of the alphabetic
"DCRM should" statements and give specific printed book-related
applications. E.g.,

bibliographical significance.
