Christine--
At Princeton, rare book catalogers provide 500 notes to records for books
containing historic maps (in our case, this means all maps prior to 1916).
Such notes record the titles of each map (within quotes), but no
other details such as engravers, cartographers, etc. unless these are of
exceptional importance. In addition, the aat term "Maps" is added to the
record (as a 655 7), which is subdivided by the location depicted and the
date (preferably the date on the map, but in the absence of that, then the
publication date). Such a 655 might look like this: "Maps--z Italy--z
Pompeii (Extinct city)--y 1846.2 aat. If there are maps of different
locations contained within the same book, a separate 655 is made for each
map. Does this help?

Apologies for cross-posting.
Has anyone done a project to enhance access to maps that are bound in
books? Either by cataloging them separately or adding note or other
access fields to the book record? I seem to remember this being
brought up at a recent ALA meeting, but I can't remember any details
or the institution(s) that might have been doing it or the method they used.
Thanks,
Christine
