Hi Henry,
If it is the direct source of acquisition, I use the 541 field in a construction like this:
541 1 |cPurchase;|aSotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge (David Laing's sale, third portion, first day, no. 1184);|d1879.|5StSaUL
Hope this helps!

Henry,
If there is a standardized way, I don't know of it. I should think that including the following as it is available in natural language, as long as it is clear, should be fine.
§ Auction house
§ Date of sale
§ Whose collection, if the sale is identified in that way
§ Lot number, if available
Sotheby sale of W.B. Rhodes' library, April 1825:17

I'd like to include a Sotheby's sale as part of the provenance note for an item in our collection. Is there a standardized way to cite an auction sale in a provenance note?
Thanks for your help,
Henry
