Dear Rare Materials and Special Collections Cataloging Community:

Recently, the DCRM/RDA Task Force agreed that substantive discussion should take place on DCRM-L. We will be issuing proposals, resolutions, and ideas for the larger community to think about and comment upon.

These initial proposals result from decisions reached via videoconferences among members of the Task Force, which by physical necessity must be limited. If anyone has a brilliant idea outside whatever box appears to circumscribe the discussion, please don't be shy about expressing it. -DJL

DCRM/RDA Discussion Topic: Revision First Steps

Proposed

§ RDA to be reviewed vis-à-vis DCRM(B) for instructions that result in differing treatments of areas or elements

§ Decisions to be made whether these differences adequately provide for the user tasks for special collections materials

§ Make proposals for alternative treatment when necessary, keeping within the spirit of RDA as much as possible

§ Issue RDA-compatible alternative rules along with instructions using these alternatives, including how to code records created using DCRM(B) with the RDA-compatible alternatives

§ Begin the process of revising and reorganizing DCRM(B) according to the RDA model of entities and attributes
Note: Elizabeth Robinson, Leader of the LC Rare Book Team, and I are currently enrolled in intensive RDA training, to be completed by the first week of August. One expected outcome is to provide an adequate basis from which to make a systematic identification of differences between RDA and DCRM(B).
