[DCRM-L] DCRM(B) and WorldCat

Nina is quite right about the fence currently set around dcrm records
(representing a policy decision). That certainly helps, a lot--and is an
encouragement to use dcrm rules well beyond the old traditional "hand-press
period" confines, if you think your work is worth preserving; and anyway,
post-1800/1820 books have plenty of tricks to play, often even subtler than
those of their predecessors.

In Connexion one can see IRs simply by going to Cataloging/Show/All
Institution Records *or* My Institution Records *or* Institution Records
for ... . But that's a small subset of the records represented by the
holdings. First Search provides links to individual catalogs by way of the
"Libraries worldwide that own item", which can make for an hour's possibly
instructive tedium. Even so, this doesn't address the problem of minimally
judged records (so to call them) and newly discovered entity distinctions.

The problem is that of producing something that is at once sturdy and
discoverable, and that has some slight chance of remaining so through the
exuberant proliferation of discovery systems that seek to simplify, and
perhaps oversimplify, the complexities inherent in complex phenomena
(stones on the path behind, not crumbs: those birds are hungry).

Peroration: Our business is that of sorting out the pathways to the most
favorable signal-to-noise ratio in cultural transmissions--it's
unglamorous, like bridge maintenance.
