I just noticed a 20th-century example of what DCRM calls "a symbol of
contraction used in continuance of the manuscript tradition" in the image
featured on the cover of the January 2016 issue of C&RL News. The Frick Art
Reference Library contributed the image (by artist Alfred Roller) from a
Vienna Secession exhibition catalog published 1902. There is a link to the
digitized item in their catalog record:

XIV. Ausstell[un]g der Vereinigung bildender Künstler Österreichs
Secession Wien

I don't recall seeing many 20th-century examples. Are they more common that
I realize? Might be fun to include in a DCRM training class :)
