As a result of this discussion, I started the practice of giving of supplying the previous year as the date of publication, whether the almanac had something that looked like a publication date or not. Our policy can be found here: http://folgerpedia.folger.edu/Almanacs#Date_of_publication

We're starting to catalog a collection of 19th- and 20th century American almanacs and I'd like to have a policy in place, whether for monographs or serials, for the many titles which lack a publication date. There's a sentiment here that supplying a date different from that of coverage is too confusing.

When cataloging an almanac that contains no publication or printing date, do you supply for date (in 260/264 and 008) the year of coverage, or the year prior to that?
