Excellent reminder, Erin, thank you--you'd think with an engraver for a brother, I'd have remembered this problem. I THINK graphics won't be part of what we're trying to avoid mis-matching, but will certainly be mindful of the possibility. Too bad it's the wrong usage on those prints, you found some great examples,
Andrea

If you're considering book illustrations, you'll want to take into account the different meanings of "proof" in relation to prints. I wrote a couple of blog posts about it a while back:

http://collation.folger.edu/2013/05/proof-prints-part-one/

http://collation.folger.edu/2013/06/proof-prints-part-two-or-proofs-and-proofiness/

For an example of the problem, see http://luna.folger.edu/luna/servlet/s/3thx29 -- a title page with the word "Proof" printed on it where "Proof" simply means "intaglio plate from early in the print run, so collectors will like it better, same as they like low-numbered limited editions."

Calling on all rare book experts: I'm trying to assemble a list of vocabulary concerning proofs, in major European languages plus Russian (transliterated). Would those of you with wider experience, be willing to give me some idea of standard language usage, in both singular and plural? If you are familiar with language which would identify a proof, a galley or page proof, or draft, with any standard variations and abbreviations, I'd be grateful. I'll look in The Usual Sources, but nothing substitutes for actual experience with usage.

What I have so far from my own work:

French:

Epreuve/Epreuves

Italian:

Bozza/Bozze

Bozza di stampa/Bozze di stampa

Bozze in colonna

Bozze impaginata

German:

Abdruck

Abzug

Druckprobe

Probeabdruck

Probeabzug

Deepest thanks for your generosity,

andrea
