[DCRM-L] 12mo vs. 16mo

I often use Gaskell (Oak Knoll Press, 1995) pages 85-86 as my "cheat sheet" for determining format. I have noticed, though, that there's little difference between the description of regular 12mo and 16mo. They can both have gatherings of 8 and have horizontal chainlines. I am working on a book right now that has been cataloged on one record as 16mo. It has gatherings of 8, horizontal chainlines, and no watermarks. However, the paper, cut, is 11.5 cm. Gaskell says a 12mo has to be at least 12.5 uncut, and I figure this could've been that big before cutting.

At the bottom of page 85 he says that the smaller formats, including 16mo, "are seldom much more than the minimum uncut heights given in this key." For 16mo, that is 9.5 centimeters. So I've been guessing 12mo is more correct for this book. Is there any other way to tell them apart?

I'm guessing from what Gaskell says that 16mo would often be less than 9.5 centimeters.
