[DCRM-L] Seller's stamp vs. vendor's stamp (etc.)

Thank you all for your thoughts, which have been quite helpful. (For one thing, "vendor's" stamps is right out of the descriptions!) In the music world, we do use "bookseller" in various other 18th cen. contexts, booksellers' advertisements, catalogs, etc.. to refer to music. While I would prefer a more precise term, Jeff has an excellent point that it's better than no collocation at all. There aren't many music terms in the RBMS controlled vocabs, which has led to a fair amount of "borrowing". Do folks have any strong feelings about the benefits/harms of using book terms for other formats? Or for/against using a more precise term like "Music sellers' stamps (Provenance)" in $2 local, instead? Think that consistency is the most important factor, but am the first to admit that I'm not clear on possible problems of local terms for the coming Brave New World of Linked Data.
Soldiering on,
andrea

Yes, I know, but in absence of better, more precise term(s), I've used 'bookseller' as best authorized choice for some book and music sellers, which many have seemed to be with Cotsen materials (songbooks with music for kids, etc), as per the info on the label, paste-in, or inked stamp. At least, that was a way to collocate some similar items for researchers, and us.

But they're not booksellers, they're music sellers. RBMS vocabularies also lack terms for map and print sellers.

What about?

"Booksellers' labels. ?2 rbprov" [+ local ID, if cataloger thinks appropriate, depending on the type of label]

Greetings, fellow rare and otherwise confusing materials catalogers, I'm working on a collection of music in which it would be useful to record music seller's stamps which appear on title or caption. Does anyone have strong feelings about the vocabulary of these animals? I don't see anything in the usual sources (but am no doubt looking in the wrong place, sorry in advance) but am sure that others have more experience on this one. These stamps are such a common occurrence that there just must be something I'm missing here. In the absence of other advice, am thinking something like this:

561: Music seller's stamp at foot of imprint: J. Ewer & Co., 1 Bow-Church Yd. Cheapside.

655 7 Sellers' stamps. $2 local

But would be grateful for wiser guidance.

Thoughts?

andrea
