[DCRM-L] Fingerprint

In 2017, as part of the 3R revision, the RSC identified Fingerprint as a distinct subtype of Identifier for Manifestation. In the current (non-beta) version of RDA, Fingerprint is mentioned only as an example in the scope of Identifier for Manifestation. See 2.15.1.1: http://access.rdatoolkit.org/rdachp2_rda2-8423.html

The definition as it appears in the beta Toolkit is the same as initially proposed by the RSC. In 2017, the RSC's Rare Materials Working Group discussed the definition and (reviewing our notes) I believe we proposed the following:

An identifier for manifestation consisting of a sequence of characters from specified locations in an early printed resource, according to an established scheme.

Our suggestion was partly informed by ISBD and DCRM(B).

ISBD
8.1.5 Fingerprint (Older monographic resources)
The fingerprint system was developed from experiments to extract identifying information from older monographic resources. It has been considered as a substitute for a standard number for older resources.
The fingerprint consists of a number of characters drawn from a number of uniform places in the text of the resource. A definitive formula for fingerprint has yet to be determined by international agreement. Until such an agreement is made, various forms of fingerprint will be considered acceptable in this area.

Example
. - Fingerprint:163704 - b1 A2 ,$en : b2 I2 a,$
Editorial comment: Fingerprint for: I.V. Vondels Gysbreght van Aemstel, d'ondergang van zijn stad en zijn ballingschap : trevrspel. - Amsterdam : W. Blaev, 1637. - 4°: A-I4.

DCRM(B)

8B3. Fingerprints
If considered important, record the fingerprint derived according to a published standard in area 8 or in a note.[1]

Bob,
I've noticed this term "fingerprint" sometimes occurs in German cataloging records. Is that where the concept came from? I have never really identified what it meant there, though it struck me as interesting. Obviously an English term.

Here's an example from 2019: OCLC #1085880235 ("Fingerprint nach Ex. der UB Frankfurt." I'm assuming that means it's for a digitalized version of a copy at the university library in Frankfurt.)

Here's one from 1971: OCLC #251887176

I'm part of an ALA group examining and commenting on the beta RDA toolkit. This upcoming version of RDA introduces the concept fingerprint (I don't believe it's been there before), with the following definition:

An identifier for manifestation that consists of a group of characters from specified locations in a manifestation combined with a date of publication or other element.

First, do you think this is an accurate and adequate definition? Additionally, if you have a chance, I'd be interested if you have any comments on the guidelines (beyond the definition) for fingerprint in the beta version (link above [you may need to log into your RDA account], but also search "fingerprint" in the search box to find all mentions of the term in the beta RDA).

Thanks,
Bob
