[DCRM-L] Hello from Sydney and potentially annoying question about DCRM (G)

Hello, Glenn! You ask: "Would you expect that the BSR-RDA-MAP provisions concerning 'archival materials' are also be followed if a cataloguer was describing material that was being described as a collection according to DCRM (G) Appendix B?"

The (unsatisfying) answer: I wouldn't expect BSR-RDA-MAP provisions to be used for describing collections of graphic materials in the first place.

Way back when, the DCRM(G) editors were (wrongly) thinking that PCC wouldn't be continuing to develop the BSR for "Archival materials" because BIBCO's primary mission "is to increase the timely availability of high-quality catalog records for monographs" (https://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/bibco/about.html) -- creating BIBCO records for archival and artificial collections doesn't make sense, since those records aren't going to be used by other institutions for copy-cataloging.

Also, keep in mind that if you're using DCRM(G) for "monographic" records, you'd follow the BSR-RDA-MAP for "Rare Materials" (and "Rare graphics" when specified) rather than the BSR-RDA-MAP for "Graphics" (which says "For rare and special graphic materials, see instead "Rare Materials").

Sorry not to be able to be more helpful!

Best wishes,

Erin.
