[DCRM-L] German terminology for printings, impressions vs editions

Speaking as a Germanist and a librarian:

"Auflage" can be either; it doesn't differentiate. Always record it in the 250 field.

"Ausgabe" is edition. I have never seen "Eindruck" in a book, but it would have to be "printing".

I’m looking for guidance on terminology for printings & impressions vs editions in general, but especially for German-language books.



If a book is designated “3. Auflage” is that the third edition or third printing?  I had always thought Auflage was “edition.” What about the terms “Eindruck” and “Ausgabe” ?



Does anyone know of good resources that explain how printings vs editions are recorded into non-US books vs how US publishers do this?
