I could not resist this email thread about fore-edge painting! Assuming this is copy-specific, either a 690 or a 655 $5 [MARC Org Code] would be appropriate. If you are planning on adding your record to WorldCat, you may want to consult BFAS 3.4.1 Copy- or Institution-Specific Information<https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/about/specialcataloging.html#localinformationinrecords>. This lists four options: Local Bibliographic Data (LBD), Local Holdings Record (LHR), fields not retained in WorldCat records (e.g., 590 or 690), and fields retained in WorldCat records (e.g., 655).
The LBD and LHR options apply if you are using WorldShare Record Manager. Whether to use a 690 or 655 field depends on whether you want this information available to everyone using WorldCat.org and if you think the information would go beyond local interest. This does meet the criteria for going beyond local interest so it’s up to you and your library’s policies. I would suggest just $5, not $5 and $3 with a call number both because I think it is harder for the user to interpret, and I think a call number is a bit of a stretch for the scope of $3, which is “Part of the described materials to which the field applies.” As an example, I would use $3 if my record was for a 2-volume set and only volume 1 had a fore-edge painting: “655 #7 $3 Volume 1: $a Fore-edge paintings $2 rbmscv $5 [MARC Org Code]”.
I also considered field 340 with a subfield $3 like “340 ## $3 Fore-edge painting: $c oil paint $2 rdamat”, but there is no subfield $5 defined for field 340 so it probably won’t work in this case. Zoe Dobbs, cough, cough, are you reading this?

Another option is to use a 655 field, but include a $5 (Institution to which field applies) with your institution code. You could even include a call number in $3 (Materials specified). It’s one way to use a controlled term in a standard MARC field, while still indicating that the term is specific to your copy. So you have multiple options 😊 and it will depend on what works best for your particular situation.

Good point Colleen! To amend my comment, if it’s just for your copy you can also use a 690 for the genre/form terms.

Hello,
I also get excited by fore-edge paintings on rare books. It is my understanding, though I am still kind of a newbie in regards to rare book cataloging, that some of the copies may not have the painting. So the catalogers who used that record may have copies without painting. If this is the case, then you should put that aspect in a local note. I could be wrong though. Good luck!

This must be my DCRM-B day!
I also have on my desk a book that has a fore-edge painting. (So exciting!)
The catalog record does not reflect this. Is there a special field to put that, or do you normally just use a 500 general note?
500 Includes fore-edge painting.
Kind regards,
