[DCRM-L] Area 8 & Appendix A comments

I agree that "Nontextual" doesn't work. I realize "nonbook" is
problematic as well--rare serials are in fact "books" as are some scores
and maps (e.g. atlases); for that matter, since sheets are counted as
"books", since they are cataloged under dcrm(b), that would mean that
sheet music and sheet maps are also "books" so far as format of ink on
paper goes. I don't think we need to tie ourselves into knots over this,
though. I prefer "nonbook" to "nontextual", especially since we also
give a list of examples of what we mean by "nonbook." I do not think the
language will be misunderstood. If we really are worried about "nonbook"
we could word it as follows:
A7. Nonbook Other formats
Do not apply the code "dcrmb" to records for nonbook materials such as
serials, maps, music, manuscripts and graphics even though they may have
been cataloged according to an adapted, "DCRM(B)-like" standard.
Instead, use a DCRM component manual for the format being described, if
one exists.

Hi, I would just like to insert a note here to say that "A7" as
it currently stands is probably better (and safer). As to referring to
all material other than books as "non-textual", don't forget that
serials, music and even maps often have much text associated with it.
Also remember that material other than books fit the AACR definition of
"monograph". Still, I believe that the asterisked phrase in Deborah's
suggested new text, however, would cover the elaboration that Alex seems
to be asking for (if I am understanding his point correctly). So, how
about:
A7. Nonbook formats
Do not apply the code "dcrmb" to records for nonbook materials
such as serials, maps, music, and graphics, even though they may have
been cataloged according to an adapted, "DCRM(B)-like" standard.
Instead, use a DCRM component manual for the format being described, if
one exists.

Thanks, Alex. This is a good question. Now that I look at it,
I'm not comfortable with referring to serials as "nonbook" formats, and
notice that DCRB did not include serials here. Comments welcome; to get
the ball rolling, I suggest changing from
A7. Nonbook formats
Do not apply the code "dcrmb" to records for nonbook materials
such as serials, maps, music, and graphics, even though they may have
been cataloged according to an adapted, "DCRM(B)-like" standard.
To
A7. Nontextual formats
Do not apply the code "dcrmb" to records for nonmonographic or
nontextual materials such as graphics, maps, music, and serials, even
though they may have been described according to an adapted,
"DCRM(B)-like" standard.*
*Use a DCRM component manual for the format being described if
one exists.
Or
*If describing rare music or serials, use the appropriate DCRM
component manual.
Our list of sources cited would then have DCRM(M) and DCRM(S).

Area 8 looks good to me--I found no typos or other errors.
I like Appendix A too, particularly the inclusion of a section
for
full-level DCRM(B). My only reservation about App. A is that
"A7. Nonbook
formats" seems to require another sentence of elaboration. Does
this
section's reference to "an adapted, 'DCRM(B)-like' standard"
allude to
DCRM(S), DCRM(M), etc.? If so why not point out that these
related
standards will have their own codes? (or provide them, if they
are known)
