POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

SPECIAL FORMATS AND METADATA COORDINATOR

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON LIBRARIES

 

Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will work closely with the
Head of Cataloging, the staff of the Cataloging Department, and the
Special Collections and Digital Services Departments to provide metadata
support for digital materials as well as original and adaptive
cataloging for Special Collections materials in a variety of physical
formats.  This position also participates in reviewing and developing
cataloging and metadata application policies and procedures; works with
people in other areas of the library on the creation and maintenance of
metadata using various metadata schemes; keeps current with trends,
innovations and best practices affecting library metadata and
collections; establishes name authorities; and participates in the
ongoing evaluation and improvement of the metadata component of library
services.  The position will report to the Head of Cataloging and will
supervise one classified staff employee. 

 

Librarians hold academic ranks pursuant to the University of Houston
Librarian's Governance document.  They are expected to develop a record
of service and professional involvement.  The Libraries support the
ongoing professional development of librarians and our goal is to
recruit librarians committed to continuous learning.

 

Qualifications:  Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited
library program; coursework, training, or experience in national
cataloging standards such as AACR2 and/or RDA, LCSH, LCC, and MARC;
training or experience using alternative metadata schemes; ability to
work effectively, independently, and collaboratively in a collegial
environment; and excellent oral, interpersonal, and written
communication skills.  Preferred: Knowledge of the emerging cataloging
rules, standards and concepts (RDA and FRBR); knowledge of linked data
and semantic web concepts; experience with relevant XML-based standards
such as Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, VRA Core, METS, and PREMIS; experience
with special collections cataloging (including rare books description)
and/or metadata on a professional or paraprofessional level; experience
with III Millennium or other integrated library systems; experience with
ContentDM or other digital collection management systems; knowledge of
archival and rare materials description standards such as DACS and DCRM;
bibliographic knowledge of one or more languages other than English;
demonstrated leadership or project management experience in a work
setting. 

 

Salary:  $49,000 to $55,000 expected hiring range, depending on
qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package; choice of
retirement programs including TIAA-CREF; tax deferred annuity program
available; release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or
local income tax.            

 

Library Information:  The UH Libraries are a member of the Association
of Research Libraries, the Greater Western Library Alliance, and the
Texas Digital Library.  The Libraries hold over 2.1 million volumes.
Total staff includes 48 professionals and approximately 110 support
