[DCRM-L] Duplicate pcc Records for an Incunable

Hi Richard,
Yes, you’re right, it shouldn’t happen. However, I’m not the cataloging police. ☺ I frequently find multiple records (as you have) for the same edition in OCLC, or separate records for what I see as a variant, and I pick the one that best represents the copy I have in hand, and requires the least work to bring it to the requirements of our processing plan.

The only thing I can suggest is to report it as a possible duplicate to OCLC. I don’t think any of us in the Rare Material Section does that, because we are under such pressure to produce “sticks” (statistics, as they are called here.)

I will be in only Tuesday and Wednesday next week; M.L. King day on Monday, then the Library is in the security zone, so the Capitol police doesn’t want us around on Thursday, and no one wants the hoi polloi around on Friday. So have a great weekend!

Smiling,

Anna

Subject: [DCRM-L] Duplicate pcc Records for an Incunable

I note that there are duplicate OCLC 042 pcc records for Martial, Epigrammata, Venice, 1475 (ISTC im00300000). This shouldn't happen, yes?

CIBN (to which I have no access that I can trace) "describes two variants" according to ISTC, Bod-inc et al., the nature of which is which is hinted at in one of two BnF records "Cet ex. diffère du précédent par la suppression des deux lignes qui précèdent l'adresse", and also in Bod-inc's copy description, "Apparently CIBN‘s variant B, with gathering h signed as h, rather than b." Neither is mentioned in the pcc records. As to the latter, hmmm... This printer's h is very b-ish--in the copy in hand only h3 is missigned b3. Earth- shattering.
